Voluntary Resignation

At my day job, we’ve been going through layoffs for the past year because our business has been slowed. I started in April 2008 and we had about 30 staff members, we grew to 70 within a year and are now back down to the high 20′s, I forget the exact count. I’ve survived many rounds of layoffs and haven’t really been worried because I know I’m in a good position to last until the very end. However, I have decided to volunteer for the next round of layoffs at my company, should they happen. They’re expected to happen by month’s end, but we haven’t received the official word, yet.

I have decided the time is now to see if I want to be a full-time affiliate. I’m going to take this summer to see what I’m able to achieve as an affiliate now that I’ll have the entire day to work on researching, developing and optimizing campaigns instead of a couple hours every night. Although I hate change, I’m extremely excited for this to happen.

I also am interested in pursuing my MBA in Finance, so I’m going to see if I can get accepted into graduate school as well.

Riley,

That’s awesome, I hope you can make it full time!

Also, what is driving you to get an MBA in Finance instead of an MBA or an MIS?

Jeremy

I’m sure it won’t be a problem going full time. The only thing holding me back was benefits.

I want an MBA in Finance because that’s what I studied as an undergrad. I’m all about a dollar. And I originally tried MIS and CS as an undergrad and hated it. Being a techie is only a hobby for me, not an occupation.

Yeah, lack of benefits is no good but if you got the cashflow it’s not a huge deal.

Good luck with your MBA :)

Good luck. I remember reading on one of your posts or interviews that you really didn’t want to give up the benefits lol. Hopefully you can save someone else’s job while taking the leap!

I’ve an MBA in finance and worked for a big company 10 years. I recently quit my job and doing IM full time. Based on my experience MBA won’t help you much with your business. If you are going to one of the top 10-15 schools, then it maybe worth it. In other places, just the degree won’t help, it is you, your experience & attitude that contributes to your success.

I don’t mean to discourage you at all. If you have a sound reason, you should do it. your personal situatino maybe different than mine. Contact me if you need help decide. Goodluck!

It’s always been a goal of mine to obtain at least an MBA in Finance.

Congratulations Riley! ! !

Nows the time brotha! If you are determined you will be able to survive. The amount of effort towards campaigns separates then men from boys in IM. You have enough connections in the industry that i think you will be plenty fine. Plus, when your livelyhood is on the line – you find the extra effort to work harder :)

Wow man I had no idea you weren’t full time. Good luck I’m sure you’ll do fine, just keep in mind now you have a whole set of other things to worry about including idleness, budgeting, etc.

Right? The kid’s a beast! Sleep is overrated!

You’ve done 5 figs in a day and you’re still at a dayjob? Fair play bro.

I know. I’m excited to see what I can do now that I’m gonna be a full time affiliate!

Me too. ;)

you been doing it good with your stuff lately, especially when we talk – the time is now especially with the industry is and you survived through it!

congrats on it and good luck man!

The ultimate plunge =P good luck and be sure to hit up the blog as soon as you find out, maybe getting laid off could be a good thing for you!

Thanks for the kind words everybody. I’m really looking forward to Wednesday, June 30th which will be my first day as a full time affiliate!

Hey Congrats man! :)

Just saw this dude, congrats!!! you bout to knock this shit out the park.

Lets collaborate on something soon

Good stuff. Get to work and let’s hear your success story in about 3 months.

Nice work Riley, I applaud the ambition! I’ll have to send over some gmat books…not that you need em. ;) You learn a lot in business school that you will use in your every day life beyond what’s in the text books… you get to work on honing your presentation skills, writing skills, problem solving in group and individual environments… plus your forced to see the other facets of business and how they work together. Ewoww approves.

*you’re

Kinda difficult to be a student and full-time affiliate, speaking from experience.

AM is a lot more demanding than any other full-time job I’ve had, and trying to study at the same time sucked. I dropped out, and I’m so glad I did.

Congrats on leaving your job. Your may have done you a favor!

Wait…you just too a voluntary lay off right? You didn’t leave the 9-5 did you?

Yea, I volunteered for layoffs at the day job. My last day was was June 28th.

Ya it was great to hear, congrats man and now we can start working together more. oh and btw i should have had you buy dinner since your makin it on easy street ;)
